The Cause

Every year too many residents and visitors to Kauai lose their lives in the ocean.

In 2009, the number of ocean-related deaths increased by 25 percent compared to average years. At the same time funding for these much needed water and ocean safety programs has been redirected due to the economy.

The Kauai Lifeguard Association (KLA) and the Kauai Ocean Task Force are dedicated to reducing deaths and increasing ocean awareness for our island residents and visitors through key programs and modern life-saving equipment.

KLA/KOTF programs that need our support include:

  • Junior Lifeguards -- A very successful youth lifeguard training program
  • W.A.V.E. (Water Awareness Visitor Education) --   designed to educate and increase ocean safety awareness for our visitors and residents
  • Access Surf – KORE (Kauai Ocean Recreation Experience) -- a volunteer program that offers physically challenged people a chance to experience and enjoy  ocean related activities
  • Rescue Tubes/Posts/Placards -- includes installing signage and rescue tubes at unguarded beaches island wide
  • Bookmarks/Brochures -- a program that provides ocean safety tips through distribution of bookmarks and brochures
  • Training of Citizens' Corps of Beach Guardians -- Volunteers who assist in rescue efforts. Many who have rescue tubes at hand and are trained in CPR and Basic First Aid.

In August, Kauai will host the 2010 State Ocean Safety Conference and Junior Lifeguard Championship. The conference and concert will bookend a memorable Kauai Water Safety Awareness Month for the KLA.
